An Xiao Mina is an American artist, designer, writer and technologist. She explores the disruptive power of networked, creative communities in civic life. Dubbing memes the "street art of the internet", she looks at the growing role of meme culture and humor in addressing social and political issues in countries like China, Uganda and the United States.

The shift to imagery and animation as a primary mode of communication on the web is a fun, creative shift from the primacy of text online. It is also having numerous effects on identity, civic engagement and creative expression. In this session we want to look at the broader implications of this shift, and what it can mean for brands, governments, organizations and anyone else working in this space.

An Xiao would like to thank Arda Ibikolgu (Bogazici University) and David Banks (Cyborgology) for sharing their research on memes during the Gezi Park protests and Rosebell Kagumire (rosebellkagumire.com) for her writing on #UgandaIsNotSpain.

Many people believe that the future of interaction is on screens. But what if we can design communication that doesn't involve screens?

Sara Bengtsson, PhD, Assistant Professor at Karolinska Institute, Sweden, is doing research which involves developing a neuroscientific model of self-esteem. She uses brain imaging techniques (fMRI), behavioural measures, and mathematical modeling for this purpose. Sara and her group have found that when performing cognitive tasks, it is particularly when we make errors that there is an interaction between the currently active self-image and task performance.

Learning new things is essential for humans. It's both fun and necessary to be part of a fast changing society. Even the Swedish prime minister is talking about the importance of being able to change carrier late in life.

Teresa is an Educational researcher, School of Education and Lifelong Learning, University of East Anglia, UK. Her interest in imagination began in the 1990’s when she was involved in Play for Life, a small UK voluntary organisation set up to stimulate fresh thinking about what kinds of play nurture children’s emotional, social, cultural and spiritual development. This led to her researching the influence of television and videos on children’s story-making.

When were you last bored? Overstimulated as we are, it rarely happens. But what if boredom is important to stimulate creativity? What if we can create "in-between" space to be more creative and better leverage the brain's natural creative capacities?

Martin Källström - Wearable Technology

Martin is the founder and CEO of Memoto. He is an experienced entrepreneur and technologist, thinker and tinkerer. The past decade was a period of transformation for him. Since both his parents passed away in cancer and his two daughters came into his life, he realized how much value there is in the small everyday moments that ties our lives together.

Technology is by now an essential part of our lives. The trend is clear, it's getting closer to our bodies. The quantified self-trend has been thriving for some years, but what happens if the technology we carry goes from measuring to documenting and enhancing our sense in real time? How will this new technology be adopted, and will we eventually become cyborgs?
